Ann Wright is coming to OKC as part of her national tour to promote her new book, Dissent: Voices of Conscience: Government Insiders Speak Out Against the War in Iraq. You can read more about the book at http://www.voicesofconscience.com/index.php

Ann Wright spent 13 years in the U.S. Army and 16 years in the Army Reserves, retiring as a Colonel. She is airborne-qualified. In 1987, she joined the Foreign Service and served as U.S. Deputy Ambassador in Sierra Leone, Micronesia, Afghanistan, and Mongolia. She was on the first State Department team to go to Afghanistan and helped reopen the Embassy there in December 2001. On March 19, 2003 she cabled a letter of resignation to Secretary of State Colin Powell, stating that without the authorization of the UN Security Council, the invasion and occupation of a Muslim, Arab, oil-rich country would be a disaster. Since then, she has been writing and speaking out for peace.

Billboards for Obama — an entry in MoveOn.org's Obama in 30 Seconds contest

April 21, 2008

Friends of mine in San Diego area entered this video in the “Obama in 30 Seconds” contest. I think it's pretty good — it has a lot of energy and evokes grassroots empowerment.

I've watched about 10 of the entries, and most were quite good — certainly as good or better than most candidate commercials on TV. Not that that's a very high bar.

Photos from the GI Rights Network Conference

April 19, 2008

If you prefer to see the photos as stills, go to my Flickr set.

The GI Rights Hotline is a network of local organizations that maintains a hotline (and website) for distributing free and accurate information on U.S military regulations and practices, including delayed entry program, discharges and harassment.

This conference was the first for the network working as a new, self-directed organization. There were workshop to enhance counseling skills, committee meetings and plenaries to hash out new by-laws. It was a great experience.

I didn't get to see nearly enough of San Diego. What few non-conference excursions I took were thanks to my friend Barbara, who lives in the area. I'll post pictures from Balboa Park, the beach and Old Town in a separate post.

True Colors Tour 2008 coming to Oklahoma City

Lineup for the OKC stop:

  • Cyndi Lauper
  • The B-52s
  • Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
  • Special Guest Andy Bell of Erasure!
  • Margaret Cho
  • Girl In A coma
  • with Host
    Carson Kressley

I just got two tickets, and will be looking for someone to accompany me to the June 23 event at the Zoo Amphitheater.

I almost bought a ticket to see Margaret Cho in Grand Prairie, TX on April 27, but balked because of the travel. Sooo glad I waited; now I get Cyndi Lauper and the B-52s as well, and more. I only wish that Rosie O'Donnell and/or Joan Armitrading was also in this lineup (it varies by location, see here for all the people involved).

The tour proceeds help various GLBT organizations, including local ones for each event. In this case, the Tulsa-based Oklahomans for Equality will benefit.

I strongly suspect that Sally Kern is at least in part responsible for this event taking place in OKC (so thank you, girlfriend!). This stop has only recently been added to the tour. I don't have any ins with the powers that be in the corporate community in Oklahoma, but I do know, for instance, that the CC had Richard Florida here a few years ago to talk about his ideas about economic development and the “creative class,” so they understand that Sally and her public ranting are not good for business. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few conversations about how some things could be arranged to counter the image that Sally's been propagating about Oklahoma. Just a guess.

I think rather than protesting Sally anymore, the gay community and its allies should start being, well, creative. Let's all decide that indeed, Sally IS responsible for the 6/23 queerfest at the Zoo, and send her flowers, balloons and love notes showing our appreciation for working so hard to bring boatloads of gay icons to our state to entertain and uplift us.

By the way, speaking of Sally Kern, sometime today PFLAG is going to release the full, 40-minute tape of its meeting with Kern (made with her knowledge), so as to refute Kern's lies about what she said. Yeah, she actually knew a recording was made, but still disavowed her promises to the group once back with her gay-bashing gang. Oww, the stupid, it burns…

'Funnel of Love' by Wanda Jackson should be official Oklahoma Rock Song

April 7, 2008

Inspired by Dustbury, and applying my activist bent to the idea, I want to get Wanda Jackson's Funnel of Love selected as the Oklahoma Rock Song, which is being sponsored by the Oklahoma History Center. But first we have to get it nominated by as many cool Oklahomans as possible. That's you, right? So go enter it!

We really don't want a repeat of that embarrassing watermelon/vegetable thing, now do we? Think how cool Oklahoma would look by (1) picking a song by a under-appreciated, shitkicking talent like Wanda (and we could take credit for getting her the R & R Hall of Fame spot she deserves), and (2) making fun of ourselves and our habit of getting in the way of tornadoes. Oh, and (3) She dated Elvis, y'all!

Dustbury has an mp3 of the recorded version of Funnel of Love. Wish I could find a video of the song from that era. But here's another vintage performance from Wanda that shows how freaking cool she was (I'm sure she still is, but you know what I mean).

Now,go nominate her while you're still smilin'!

The reasons I used are the ones suggested by Dustbury: From and living in OK, Okie Roy Clark plays, and tornado as metaphor. I shoulda dropped Elvis' name; you can add that in.

Something you (probably) don't know about the late Charlton Heston

April 6, 2008

Charlton Heston (1923 – 2008) passed away at his home on Saturday.

I wasn't a fan of Charlton Heston the actor. I didn't agree with his stance on gun rights. So, frankly, I didn't have more than a neutral regard for him — until I found out something in his past that he humbly didn't mention, but maybe should have. That he didn't throw it in his critics' faces says something quite positive about his character, regardless of any of his other political positions or character traits.

Because Charlton Heston was a great American, and was willing to put his career and reputation on the line at a moment in our history when it really mattered and made a difference.

And one of those those moments occurred right here in Oklahoma.

From Chapter 9 of The History of African Americans in the West by Professor Quintard Taylor, Department of History – University of Washington:

CHARLTON HESTON MARCHES IN OKLAHOMA CITY

Today Charlton Heston is known primarily for the politically conservative causes and candidates he publicly supports. However in 1961 Heston was one of the first Hollywood celebrities to join the picket line established by Clara Luper to protest racial discrimination. Here is a brief description of his presence in Oklahoma City.

It was the last Saturday in May 1961, and Charlton Heston, Hollywood's Oscar-winning Biblical actor, was on his way to Oklahoma City where he, Dr. Jolly West, nationally-known psychiatrist, and Dr. Chester M. Pierce, black scientist on the staff of the Veterans' Administration Hospital, were scheduled to lead a protest march against Segregation in public accommodations in Oklahoma City.

The news had spread like wild fire and large crowds had assembled on Main Street to get a quick glimpse of the star.

Charlton Heston was met by the NAACP Youth Officers led by the president and about one-hundred black and white demonstrators, six policemen, a number of newsmen and Trudy, the black dog that took part in all the marches.

I was stationed with a large crowd of NAACP workers, friends, well-wishers and people of all ages, creeds and colors.

I have never seen anything more dramatic, more historical as those three handsome, dignified, successful men walking down the streets carrying signs that they had prepared themselves. The blue and black sign that Charlton Heston carried said, “All men are created equal–Jefferson” on the front and “Racial discrimination is Un-American” on the back.

The crowd was caught up in the unbelievable realities of the moment and when the trio reached our group, wild applause went up in the air. Oklahomans sounded like they do when the Big Red football scores against Texas or Nebraska. We waved flags, sang songs and in a military sounding voice, Dr. West issued a command. The trio marched with the crowd following. Charlton Heston stopped, shook hands, talked and marched.

A few hecklers yelled, “Go back to Hollywood, you Jew!!” “West, you are no psychiatrist, you're a damn fool!”

But the march continued. We marched slowly by the John A. Brown' Department Store, Anna Maude's Cafeteria and Bishop's Restaurant–the three strongholds of Segregation. There was no violence.

Elliott Tyler, Jerry Nutt and John Fast carried anti-Heston signs which read, “Is Beverly Hills integrated?”

Charlton Heston's face was lighted with love and understanding of an oppressed people. He told the group that he sincerely believed that most Americans agreed with Thomas Jefferson.

This was his first demonstration. He said that a great many of us have only paid lip service to the equality of man and this is a very bitter thing for me to do.

Every step that Heston, West and Pierce took was adding tons of Freedom vitamins to our tired bodies that had been protesting for three years.

Heston took pictures with NAACPers, car hops, and the three got into a waiting automobile after the hour's march and went to Calvary Baptist Church where a large crowd was waiting. There he told the crowd, “I was very pleased with the march and I was prepared for some hostility at the start of the march. I'm used to taking part in marches and chariot races only when they're fixed, but today I didn't have a script!” he said, smiling.

He explained that as far as he knew Beverly Hills was integrated, however, he had been in Spain making a movie… The audience went wild and Charlton Heston looked as if he was enjoying every moment…

Source: Clara Luper, Behold the Walls, (Oklahoma City, 1979), pp. 134-136.

This image of the Hollywood icon taking the kind of hostility he could easily avoid should give those of us on the left who continue to fight injustice pause before criticizing the man who, in his later years, suffering from Alzheimer's in addition to the usual pitfalls of age, was gratuitously picked on by Michael Moore (in my opinion, a scene that Bowling for Columbine could well have done without), and regularly ridiculed by leftists (including me).

People –and their political beliefs — are seldom as simple and one-sided as our society (particularly the media) try to paint them.

Charlton Heston was a man who had strong principles and put them out there publicly despite the possible negative consequences that might ensue. He did it it at the height of his career, and at its lesser ebb. He took plenty of shots for his politics, mostly from those with nothing to lose by hurling them, and stood up pretty well to those as well.

What could be more righteous, more transcendently human and, dare I say, more patriotically American than that?

The cupcakes challenge: Andrew Rice calls on Inhofe to help troops

April 4, 2008

Yesterday in Norman, Oklahoma, a nice young man made a donation to Bake Sales for Body Armor, a project that does just what the name implies. See, the U.S. government has significant shortfalls in supplying some of the little things that soldiers like to have handy, like effective armor to help keep them safe.

The Bake Sales for Body Armor idea was started by an Iraq vet and the wife of another soldier about three years ago, and bake sales have been held all across the country.

Students at Oklahoma City Community College held their fourth such fundraiser on Thursday, and they were happy to see a return customer, who they know does more than just mouth platitudes like “Support the troops.” He actually puts his money where his mouth is.

Who was it buying cupcakes for a cause? Oklahoma state legislator Andrew Rice, who wants to replace the infamous Republican wingnut Senator, Jim Inhofe, who just keeps embarrassing us on a global scale, if you know what I mean.

Inhofe is one of those who are gung ho for the war in Iraq, even now. But, if you actually examine his voting record on bills that would give those fighting it tangible support, including armor, it shows different priorities.

Most folks just know him as a Climate Change Denier but that barely scratches the surface of what's wrong with Inhofe. For someone who is so aggressively pro-war, he's incredibly anti-veteran and anti-service member. The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America looked at his voting record and gave him a D-. On October 5, 2005 his deciding vote against the bipartisan Health Care for Veterans Amendment killed a bill that had passed in the House 398 to 19. The following month Chuck Grassley and Barbara Boxer co-sponsored a bill to get desperately needed funds for counseling, mental health, and rehabilitation services for veterans diagnosed with mental illness, post-traumatic stress disorder, or substance abuse. Again, Inhofe voted against our military veterans. That's been his pattern, a pattern that includes outrageous tax cuts for millionaires while short-changing vets.

But vets aren't the only people Inhofe has consistently short-changed. His voting record on active duty military personnel is abysmal– the worst in the entire U.S. Senate. Of the 14 roll calls involving the welfare of our fighting men and women since May, 2003, Inhofe has voted against them a breathtaking 14 times.

So, does Sen. Jim Inhofe support the troops or not? Andrew Rice — and I — want to know. Maybe you also wonder about this little niggling issue…

I suggest we contact him and find out. Please join me in politely asking Sen. Inhofe to join other Oklahomans in buying some body armor for the troops that we all want to come home safe.

Senate offices and phone list

I can't find contact info for his campaign office but his Facebook page is public and has his email as jim@jiminhofe.com and phone as (405) 843-4294, which is different than the OKC Senate office number.

Here's the press release from the campaign explaining Andrew's challenge to Sen. Inhofe. Below that is an update with some facts about Inhofe's voting record on “supporting the troops” for real.

Rice Donates to Body Armor Drive, Challenges Inhofe to Do the Same

OKLAHOMA CITY (April 3, 2008) State Senator Andrew Rice, D-OKC,
personally contributed to a fundraising drive today to provide body
armor and other supplies to American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan,
and challenged U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe to do the same.

Rice is opposing Inhofe in this year's general election on November 4.

The “Bake Sale for Body Armor” currently taking place in the College
Union at Oklahoma City Community College is the fourth such fund
raiser conducted by the college chapter of Young Democrats. All
donations for the purchase of cookies, pie and cakes are fully
tax-deductible. Previous events have netted more than $5,500.

“While it is regrettable that our troops are still not being supplied
with all the modern equipment that is available to protect them, I am
extremely proud of the Oklahoma City Community College students for
doing their part, and I'm happy to do mine,” Rice said.

Bake Sales for Body Armor is a national, non-profit organization
formed in response to a Department of Defense Study that showed that
74 out of 93 Marines killed between March 2003 and June 2005 could
have been saved by side-protecting body armor that was not being
provided for American troops. While the Defense Department has
increased shipments of body armor, there are still unmet needs in Iraq
including medical supplies and communications gear. Proceeds from Bake
Sales for Body Armor will supply as much equipment as possible for
soldiers deployed around the world.

Rice said that much of the proceeds from body armor bake sales are now
being used to purchase helmet liners to protect solders from
concussions that result from explosions and drop-leg armor that
protects their femoral arteries from IED explosions.

“These items usually cost about $200 each, so it doesn't require a
huge amount of money to save the life of just one of our brave
soldiers,” Rice said. “I hope Senator Inhofe and other members of
Oklahoma's Congressional delegation will join me in contributing to
this worthy cause.”

Rice said that even though the sponsoring organization is a Young
Democrats chapter, “this isn't about being Democrat or Republican.
It's about doing the right thing for our troops.”

Interested donors who can't visit Oklahoma City Community College
campus today may contribute online at www.bakesalesforbodyarmor.org.

Here's a update I received from Andrew's campaign with more info on Inhofe's voting record:

Inhofe's record on voting for needed body armor for troops is abysmal. A couple of examples:

In late 2003, Inhofe voted against better body armor for our troops, by opposing an amendment to the FY04 Supplemental Appropriations bill to provide an additional $322 million for safety equipment, including body armor, to troops in Iraq. Earlier that year, Inhofe voted against providing an additional $1.047 billion for procurement of National Guard and Reserve equipment. According to Mary Landrieu, the bill's sponsor, much of the money would have been used for protective gear for Guard and Reserve troops. [Vote 376, 10/2/03; Vote 116, 4/2/03]

Because of Inhofe's terrible voting history on issues related to active-duty military personnel and veterans, Andrew Rice has challenged him to show some support for our troops by personally contributing to the worthy cause of Bake Sales for Body Armor in order to demonstrate some level of support for our servicemen and -women.

Also, take a look at this mention on Inhofe's voting record today from Down with Tyrrany!. (This follows his recent post on HuffPo and Andrew's discussion of the Iraq War.)
